Rain splashed across our faces, almost blinding us as we crossed over waterfalls and cleared trees at 50 feet in the air. The feeling was akin to sticking one's head out of a car window in the middle of a rainstorm. Except, here, our whole bodies were immersed. Our clothes clung to our bodies, every last thread soaked. But the rain didn't matter so much; all of us were still smiling.

We had just passed over 10 waterfalls, gliding on a wire from one platform to the next. Some of the falls we could reach down and touch with our fingers, and others we paused over, suspended in the air, as the water crashed and swirled below our feet.

The rain waited until we were at the 23rd of 25 platforms. But, when it came, it added a whole new element. “This has been incredible, rain and all,” said a man harnessed to a tree next to me, who was touring the country with a singles group. “By far, the coolest thing we have done,” said a woman on the same tour.
The canopy experience is just one facet of the adventure hotel Barbara and Dietmar Maier began stitching together – almost by accident – 15 years ago.

    Canopy Tours Costa Rica
The Canopy Tour over 11 Waterfalls also offers two rappels for an special experience.

The couple came from Germany with plans to retire in the hills above Miramar, near the Central Pacific port city of Puntarenas. As they were putting up the frame of their new home on an undeveloped lot about 15 minutes from town, people stopped by and asked for a room. The Maiers looked at each other and thought, why not? So they added a handful of guest rooms to their new home.

As horse lovers, they began accumulating a stable of Andalusians and Arabians and offering tours to their guests. They added canopy lines over their property, as well as a climbing wall. And, step by step, Adventure Park & Hotel Vista Golfo took shape.

“This was not what I had in mind when I came here,” said Barbara, who had envisioned a relaxing retirement, surrounded by the patchwork of farms and the pockets of trees that cover the enveloping valley.

“But I couldn't be happier.” Watching the guests come in, drenched from the rain with smiles on their faces, she added, “It gives me a sense of satisfaction.”

Like the hotel, the 11-waterfall canopy tour came about at the suggestion of someone else.Close to eight years ago, Dietmar took a few friends on a hike to a series of waterfalls that cascaded down the mountainside less than a mile from the Maiers' home. His friend turned to him and said, “Dietmar, you should really take advantage of this. It's beautiful.” That was the beginning of the 25-platform canopy tour that now draws large groups from cruise ships and claims to be the only canopy experience in the country that passes over waterfalls.

The most recent addition to the hotel is a 33-element ropes course, in the highest branches of a nearby grove. A relatively new concept in Costa Rica, the course combines rope swings, knotted ladders and suspended beams, which are intended to encourage teamwork, risk-taking and trust. The Maiers hope to attract businesses looking for daylong team-building retreats.

Other activities include a night canopy tour, an ATV Fun Park, horseback riding and cloud forest tours. The hotel itself overlooks the valley, with distant views of the Gulf of Nicoya. The rooms are simple but clean and comfortable. Barbara acknowledges it's not the hotel amenities that draw people here. “We are a mountain hotel. We aren't a luxury hotel,” she said, adding that the rooms and the restaurant simply provide guests an accessible way to take advantage of the tours. Offering a slew of package deals, the Maiers encourage guests to try as many of the activities as possible in a two- to three-day stay.

“We live on the edge of the world,” Barbara said. “Two weeks doesn't make sense here, but three days? Yes.”
Depending on which activities a guest selects from the menu of options, those three days could be exhausting. Guests may not leave Adventure Park & Hotel Vista Golfo feeling refreshed or rested, but they can carry away the satisfaction of having done something thrilling, as well as some pretty special mental images.
Remember the hotel's advice to incoming guests: “Make sure you bring bug repellent, comfortable clothes, closed-toe shoes and an eagerness to experience activities unique to the country.”

    Zip down to Costa Rica

    By Rachel Lebeaux

    GateHouse News Service

    Boston —

The rain pelted my face as I stood atop the treetop platform and a guide hooked my harness to an overhead zipline. I peeked over the side of the platform — it was a long way down. Gulp.

“Sit back in your harness, like you’re in a chair,” the guide instructed me. Drawing in a deep breath, I leaned back and lifted my legs — and then, I was off, zipping through the treetops. Raindrops hurtled down, making me go faster, or so it seemed. I turned my head to the left and to the right and found myself surrounded by the verdant rainforest. I glanced down and gasped at the majesty of a three-tiered waterfall cascading beneath me.

It was cold. It was beautiful. It was a little scary. And it was completely exhilarating.

Coasting through a treetop canopy is a quintessential Costa Rican experience, and Adventure Park Costa Rica, located in Miramar, 2 1/2 hours northwest of the capital city of San Jose, not only provides the thrill of soaring far above the ground, but the opportunity to admire gushing waterfalls and search for high-altitude wildlife as you fly past its home.

“The biggest adventure you can take in Costa Rica is the canopies with us,” said Adventure Park co-owner Barbara Maier. “You feel really close to the forest when you’re rappelling.”

Maier and her husband, Dietmar, are German natives and came to Costa Rica 16 years ago when their son, Daniel, was only three weeks old. Dietmar purchased the farm property in Miramar without telling his wife first, but it wasn’t an unwelcome surprise.

“We were always looking for a nice place to live,” Maier said, “and we wanted to do something special with it.”

Eight years ago, the Maiers decided to create an adventure park featuring a high-ropes course, all-terrain vehicles track, horseback riding and, of course, zipline canopy tours that provide stunning access to the area’s picturesque rainforest and 11 waterfalls. The 25-cable course takes participants high above the ground, but any concerns about the height usually dissipate after a few successful runs.

“On the first cable, you’re nervous,” Maier said. “On the second cable, you enjoy it.”

It’s one example of how Costa Rica is a varied country boasting nature, scenery and sports galore, and often activities that combine all three.

Many of the country’s most popular tourist spots are within a few hours’ drive of Adventure Park Costa Rica, including Arenal, the famous, active volcano in Fortuna, and Monteverde, with its famous “cloud forests” where a fine mist hangs over the canopy. Also within a day’s drive is the Pacific coast province of Guanacaste, where surfing is supreme. The capital, San Jose, is home to many of the country’s premier restaurants and museums. With a car rental, a day or overnight trip to Adventure Park Costa Rica can easily fit into a vacation.

For those guests looking to spend a bit more time ATVing or horseback riding, Adventure Park Costa Rica also has its own hotel, Adventure Park Hotel Vista Golfo, where guests can retire after a long day of sport.

“It’s nice to have [guests] stay here, and welcome them when they come back from the tours,” Maier said. “They’re always happy and proud that they did it.”

We drove to Miramar from San Jose the morning of our tour. It started at 9 a.m. with a one-hour horseback ride on the rocky, hilly paths leading up the mountain. We then harnessed up and spent the next three hours ziplining, with a short mid-trail break next to a waterfall-created pool — wear your swimsuit underneath your clothes if you want to take a dip!

The wind whooshing by you as you zip from tree to tree is an absolute rush, as is the feeling as you approach a tree platform at high speeds and slow yourself down by tugging on the rope (don’t worry, there’s an emergency brake and a guide to catch you). Some lines even allow you to rappel backwards, requiring an entirely different grip on the ropes.

As you undertake this adventure, don’t forget to check out the soaring waterfalls, craggy mountains and abundant rainforest around you. It’s easy to forget to admire the nature that makes Costa Rica so famous around when you’re zipping past it at top speed.

    IF YOU GO:

GETTING THERE: San Jose International Airport is easily accessible by several airlines, including American Airlines, JetBlue, Continental Airlines and Delta. Prices from Boston start as low as $270 roundtrip. Travelers are required to carry a passport. Adventure Park Costa Rica is a 2 1/2 hour drive from San Jose.

STAYING THERE: Adventure Park Costa Rica, with its own canopy tour, high-ropes course, all-terrain vehicle track and horseback riding, also has its own hotel, Adventure Park Hotel Vista Golfo. Prices for a double range from $56 in the low season to $140 for double room in the high season, and can be combined with tours for lower prices. There is also a restaurant on the property, “El Tucan,” with a meal included with some tours.

QUICK TIPS: Knowing some Spanish isn’t a necessity, but it doesn’t hurt. Street signs can be scarce when driving, so don’t hesitate to stop and ask locals for directions. Make sure to try a casado – the classic, fresh Costa Rican dish usually served with chicken, beef or fish, rice, beans, salad and plantains.
